Francis S. Reilly, of Fort Myers, Florida and formerly of Cobleskill, Tarrytown and Irvington, died Thursday, February
12, in Florida.
He was 71.
Dr. Reilly was born January 10, 1933, the son of Anne and James Reilly of Irvington.
He graduated from Fordham University and New York Medical College in 1958.
He was a resident physician in general and thoracic surgery at Flower and Fifth Avenue Hospital in New York City and
the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital.
He was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
A veteran, he was a combat surgeon, serving as captain and chief of surgery at the 8th Field Hospital, Nha Trang,
South Vietnam, from 1966-67.
He was one of the only two thoracic surgeons in Vietnam at that time.
Upon return from Vietnam, he went into private practice in Tarrytown at Phelps Memorial Hospital.
In 1971 he moved to Cobleskill and continued his surgical practice at the Cobleskill Hospital until his retirement in
1991.
He then became involved in politics and was elected to five terms as supervisor of the Town of Cobleskill.
During that time he was also on staff at the Stratton Veterans Hospital in Albany.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Caroline, and their five children and spouses: James (Mary Beth), Maureen,
Anne Marie (Peter), Thomas (Katherine), and Robert. Also grandchildren Caroline, Ryan, Brennan, Caelyn, Sean
and James; and his brother, James (Barbara) and two nieces of Seminole, Florida.
Calling hours were Tuesday, February 14 at the Dwyer Funeral Home, Tarrytown.
Funeral services will be at 10am today, February 18, at the Immaculate Conception Church, Irvington.
Burial will follow at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
He was a member of Amvets of Schoharie County, Post 175.
